Last week, Kendrick Lamar finally revealed the October 2 release date for his long anticipated Aftermath debut good kid, m.A.A.d. city. Now, in a recent interview with the UK’s R&R Productions, the Compton up-and-comer turns the spotlight on his favorite Hip Hop peers.

Not surprisingly, K. Dot explained that his personal favorite contemporaries in the game are his Black Hippy brethren ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. In addition, he said that one of his current favorite emcees from outside his TDE clique is recent Def Jam signee Gunplay.

“I got a lot of folks that I mess with – first and foremost, my folks…Black Hippy – ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul,” he explained. “We lock in and we’re real competitive, that’s where I get my thrive and my skills and all that from, just off their energy. Outside of [them], I mess with a few people. Somebody I’m bumping right now is Gunplay, you heard him on ‘Cartoons and Cereal.’”

K. Dot also discussed the pressure he feels having to live up to anticipation with his debut good kid, m.A.A.d. city. He explained that he isn’t satisfied with what he’s already achieved creatively, and that he wants his first album to prove to listeners his worth as an artist.

“I really just kept everything in-house [with good kid, mA.A.d. city], people that I’ve been grinding with since day one,” he said. “They know me, they know my sound and I feel they’re the best – Dave Free, Soundwave, Tae Beats, Willie B, the whole Digi+Phonics movement. It’s really tight-knit, man.I really still want to show and prove. A lot of people get to this position where I’m at and feel like they’ve made it, so they want to go out and reach out to all the big producers. I still feel like I need to show and prove myself for my first album that I stand alone on my own two feet creatively, and now, that’s exactly what I’m going to do with the music.”

Nas Says He Was Supposed To Appear On Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill”

Nas also breaks down his sophomore album “It Was Written.”

Nas recently chopped it up with Complex.com following his recent cover story, breaking down his sophomore album It Was Written and giving anecdotes on every track from the project.

During his interview for the feature, Esco spoke on recording with Lauryn Hill for “If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)” and revealed that he was originally supposed to be on her classic debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

“I was supposed to be on the The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album but I was caught up with whatever and I never made it to the sessions. That’s one of my greatest regrets with music,” he said. “I was getting the calls to come rap on the album and something was always happening at the time when I got the call. Lisa Ellis of Sony always used to tell me, ‘Man you fucked up, you’re supposed to be on that album.’”

He said that his relationship with Hill, who is celebrating her 37th birthday today, was deeper than music.

“Me and Lauryn were musical peers, we were brother and sister. We looked out and did the thing. [The Fugees] were on tour in Europe so she took the Concorde from London and flew back. We shot the video in Times Square.”

Diggy Simmons Launches Diss Track Aimed At J. Cole

Diggy Simmons took umbrage at a J. Cole Line on “Grew Up Fast,” and has now responded with “What You Say To Me.”

Young rapper Diggy Simmons was none to pleased when J. Cole addressed Diggy in a dismissive manner on “Grew Up Fast “: “Move along cocksucker, ain’t got nothing to see / ‘Less you talking blockbuster, you niggas is not Russell / You more Diggy, me? I’m more Biggie / No diss to the young buy, I’m just rapping, get bored quickly.”

In response, Diggy decided to lay it on the line with his new track, “What You Say To Me,” spotted at MissInfo.TV:

“The other day I was listening to Purple Rain / couldn’t believe all of the things that I heard em say / Who dat, who dat, you know who it is / Heard you lying on my sis, tellin people that you hit / When your album drops I’ma hit you with your bricks / So I’ma bomb first on you since you wanna riff / Who you gonna call, you ain’t got no friends / This fight is fixed, you ain’t got no wins / Little nigga named Cole think he live like me / Jet setter trend setter, yeah you not like me / Can’t find a girl that you know that do not like me / Can’t find a girl I know, who know you, you dumb fool / Wasn’t even poppin’ in the school you used to go to.”

Diggy’s reference to J. Cole’s “Purple Rain ” illustrate another facet of the dispute, as Cole referenced Diggy’s sister, Vanessa, on the cut.

The Weeknd contributed both as a singer and as a producer on Drake’s sophomore album, Take Care. In a recent interview with Choice FM, the rapper discussed his collaboration with his fellow Toronto native.

“Well, ‘Crew Love ‘ was a song I actually heard for the first time when I was on the ‘Moment 4 Life ‘ video set with Nicki Minaj,” explained Drizzy.

“One of my friends played me this song,” he continued. “At the time, we were just building our relationship with The Weeknd. Kinda just talking to him for the first time. It was a song he had…the hook and his verse was done already, and I was like, ‘Yo, this song is brilliant. Listen to how it starts, and what he’s saying, and the sentiment in the song.’”

“That’s where I’m at in my life,” stated Drake. “Love in the crew. It’s not just about me. It’s about the Weeknd, it’s about Niko, it’s about my cousin Ryan. They love all of us.”
